Thought I'd pass on word that my novel The Bookstore Lady, the one I started to write when I first joined the HWG in 2007, is being published by Books We Love! Nice Development

Hi gang.  I was pleased to find out that one of the flash stories from my book in progress (OF MOMENTUM AND METAL BALLS CLANGING) entitled Lincoln's Boys, was accepted for publication by Bareback Literary Magazine, an online literary publication.  It can be seen in the July issue.  Go to barebacklit.com to check it out.  Cheers.

Author appearance at Orangeville Public Library

Orangeville Public Library 150th Series: Author Alyxandra Harvey

Author Alyxandra Harvey will make a presentation on Victorian society and ghosts, and the connection to her teen fiction novel Haunting Violet,which was nominated for the 2012 Teen Choice Book Awards, and was the Honour Book for the 2012 Ontario Library Association Red Maple award!

Ms. Harvey's presentation will include the history of vampires in literature and folklore, as well as the fairy tale genre, since Hearts at Stake is a Snow White retelling with vampires.

In case you're wondering, she doesn't just talk the talk, she walks the walk; the Victorian stone house in which she and her husband live has a few resident spirits of its own, and she's is okay with that - as long as they behave themselves.

Among Ms. Harvey's favourite books are The Wood Wife by Terri Windling, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she's smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.

Copies of her books will be available for purchase and signing. Free admission. Light refreshments will be provided.

150^th Series presents award-winning author and poet Harry Posner. Mr. Posner's novel Charivari was inspired by a poem that he will perform as a spoken word piece in honour of National Poetry Month. He will also read from his two novels highlighting the poetry inside the prose, and speak about the challenges and delights of writing a first novel.

Mr. Posner is a member of Words Aloud Poetry Collective, and is on the organizing committee of Wordstock: Collingwood’s Literary Festival. He enjoys poetry slams and is active in promoting poetry and other art forms in the community. Mr. Posner writes plays, film scripts, song lyrics and fiction for both adults and children.

Charivari:

In 1967’s ‘Summer of Love’ LBJ’s America is fighting a losing war in Vietnam, there are race riots in the streets, hippies are thrusting flowers into gun barrels, and LSD has just been declared an illegal substance. Professor of Psychiatry Thomas Quincy, disillusioned with his profession and his life, is at a crossroads. One of his patients has recently committed suicide, an echo twenty-two years later of his father’s death, a domineering father who was an absentee landlord, choosing his beloved circus over his family. When Thomas’ uncle gifts him with his father’s box of circus photographs, Thomas determines to track down members of the Quincy Circus troupe, gather their stories and through them come to terms with the man who was his father, and with his own deep wounds. His journey across the body of America ultimately becomes a search for simple human truths, and a meditation on the nature of identity, memory, and love. But is it too late, and at what cost?

Poetic Notes from a Novelist

Hi gang.  I'll be giving a talk/reading at the Orangeville Library, Mill Street Branch meeting room on Tuesday, April 23rd at 1pm as part of the Orangeville 150th anniversary series Artists and Authors @ the Library.  I'll be talking about the challenges and delights of writing a first novel.  April is National Poetry Month, and in honour of this I will be performing some spoken word poetry as well as reading excerpts of poetic prose from several wonderful novelists.  Admission is free and nibblies provided.  Hope to see you there!
